UGEB2381 Chemistry for a Sustainable Future

Course Description

Chemical pollution has a substantial impact on human health and well-being. At the same time, the global demand for energy and natural resources is growing, leading to more pollution or even climate changes. In order to integrate environmental sustainability with economic growth, it is important to develop clean energy research technology, environmentally sound industrial processes and sustainable production patterns.

This course is designed for students with minimal background in chemistry to acquire chemical knowledge related to sustainable development. It introduces the basic concepts of chemistry that are essential for students to understand the scientific aspects of environmental and human health challenges such as pollution and energy crisis. This course also discusses the principles of green chemistry and explain how they are applied to real-life technologies to create a sustainable future for the world.

Learning Outcome

Students who have finished this course are expected to:

  • Describe some basic concepts in chemistry ranging from atomic structure and chemical bonding to chemical reactions.
  • Identify the current environmental and human health challenges.
  • Explain the principles of green chemistry and the importance of chemistry to sustainable development.
  • Evaluate the applications of chemical knowledge and innovative technologies in achieving a sustainable future.
