UGEC1051 History of Chinese Families

Course Description

This course examines the development and changes of Chinese family system since the Ming Dynasty, with emphasis on its relations with society. The course also discusses the ways in which Western cultures and values affected the traditional concept of Chinese family and its system in the 20th century. This course covers several SDGs themes. Gender equality in modern China and how the changing of family patterns reshaped the modern China in social and economic areas will be discussed. Also, the perspectives of women’s images and welfare of women in modern China are discussed. The new status of women after New China and their roles in economic development will also be examined. It is hope that students are able to review the gender equality in China after this course, which fulfills the SDGs goals.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Comprehend different stages of development in the history of the Chinese family and family policies;
  • Critically analyze current issues of China and Hong Kong in relation to the change of the family system;
  • Apply historical knowledge and methodology to other fields of study.
  • How gender movements developed in China; and
  • Integrate to SDGs topics by analyzing women status and family well-being.
